The Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands’ Association has been supporting New Zealand bands since 1928. From those early days, bands have grown in numbers and strength, and the level of performance has improved beyond belief.

The RNZPBA is managed by a small, dedicated team. Our mission is simple – to promote pipe bands, and pipe band membership throughout New Zealand, by whatever means possible.

History

In 1896, New Zealand’s first pipe band, the Caledonian Pipe Band of Southland, was formed. Its origins continue today in the ILT City of Invercargill Highland Pipe Band.

The Highland Pipe Bands’ Association of New Zealand was formed in 1928. Its 12-person National Executive comprised a President, North and South Island Vice Presidents, a Secretary/Treasurer, and eight Board members representing eight newly formed Centres.

In 1982, the organisation became the Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands’ Association, and in 1985 it became an incorporated society.

A 1993 review sought a more agile organisation. The recommended Management Board comprised a President and two Board members. The presidency would be contested annually, with the other members serving staggered, contestable two-year terms.
