By the late 1990s, South America had six pipe bands: three in Buenos Aires, two in Montevideo, and one in São Paulo. Despite the distances between their home cities, frequent contact and joint events led to the idea of a regional association.
SPBASA was officially inaugurated at the First South American Pipe Band Gathering in Montevideo, Uruguay, on 17 April 2004.
The association was designed around the region’s needs. It is run by an Executive Committee elected every two years by member pipe bands, through representatives on a Board that also includes independent pipers and drummers.
